7 Sustainable Holiday Gifts

This December edition of the Energy Sciences Newsletter has a festive list of sustainable products to gift yourself or others. The ES team wishes you a sustainable, safe, and joyful Holiday season!

1. Books

Do you know an avid reader or book collector? Get their favorites list and head to secondhand online retailers like Biblio for rare books and ThriftBooks for everything else. Buying secondhand is a great way to help lower paper waste due to new book production.

Another way to shop stories sustainably is right at home. IndieBound is an excellent resource for finding an independent bookstore near you! You are putting money back into your community through independent bookstores, lowering your carbon footprint, and bolstering local development.

2. Fashion

Denim is a staple in anyone’s closet, but did you know a standard pair of jeans takes 1,500 gallons of water to make? At Warp & Weft, it only takes 10 gallons, and 98% of the water is recycled after use. Warp & Weft is a family-owned business committed to fair labor and wages, sustainability, and size inclusivity. With denim for adults and kids, you could have everyone on your list covered!

Looking for something cozier for the season? Check out Pact. Based in Colorado, Pact is a Fair Trade Certified, GOTS certified organic cotton company that makes amazingly soft underwear, clothing, and bedding for adults and children. With carbon offset shipping and donation programs for used clothes, they are dedicated to helping you look good and do good for the planet.

3. Tech Accessories

Everyone likes to switch it up now and then when it comes to their phone case – look no further than Pela! They strive to eliminate waste and pollution in the tech accessories market with their 100% compostable bioplastic iPhone, iPad, and Android phone cases in addition to smartwatch bands and much more!

4. Hygiene Products

For the loved one who wants to start small in their sustainability journey, hygiene products are a great place to begin. Meow Meow Tweet, a Bunny Certified company (meaning they don’t test on animals), has a wide range of products like shampoo, skincare, natural deodorant, sunscreen, and bug spray that are all planet-friendly with recyclable packaging.

Another way to start small? Try Bite toothpaste bits. The bits are packaged in reusable and recyclable glass jars; there is no squeezing necessary – you crunch up a toothpaste bit with your teeth, wet your toothbrush, and brush away. Bite also has a subscription option for the gift that keeps on giving!

5. Laundry and Dishwashing Materials

Another small step with a significant impact is laundry and dishwashing materials at Dropps. Awarded the 2017 EPA Saver Choice Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Dropps also offers a wide range of sustainable everyday products that would make the perfect stocking stuffer.

6. Composting

We all know someone with a green thumb! Help them make their fertilizer at home with an easy-to-use composter. Although they come in various sizes, it is always better to start small. The Living Composter at Uncommon Goods is designed to be odorless and fits perfectly on any surface. Fruit and vegetable peelings, grain foods, and tea bags will become healthy plant food in no time.

If you want to be the most sustainable gift-giver this year, purchasing a class for your loved one is the way to go! There’s a class for everything, whether cooking, photography, singing, or food canning. Even more, with so many virtual class opportunities available, your loved ones can remain safe during the Holiday season! We recommend Skillshare, an all-virtual class platform.
